Those persons who know the deep peace of God,
the unfathomable peace that passeth all understanding,
are always men and women of much prayer.” R.A. Torrey

Their house was an extension of home. A peace-filled place where I could easily slip in to their predictable everyday like I belonged. Because they made sure I did.

Routines often brought them to their matching rosewood rockers. Her work-softened hands were always busy, even while sitting. And she would rock in tune to what my Great-Grandpa was singing/humming across the way.

What I Learned from My “Other” Mother

lessons-i-learned-button

I have a Godly mom from whom I’ve learned so much about life and faith. But I’ve also been blessed to have a “second mom” who filled in when my mom couldn’t be there and taught me things that only she could.

What started as a friendship with her daughters when my family moved to a new town in my senior year of high school turned into gaining a second family. I don’t have all the photographs, but the snapshots in my memory are filled with pictures of “Mom” Keller.

For a period of time I spent more Thanksgivings with the Keller family than I did my own when I wasn’t able to leave town because of work.

When I think about my mom, the thing that comes to mind first is that she is a worshiper of Jesus. She was involved in leading worship at our church since I was very small. I spent many a Thursday night worship practice running up and down the aisles of the church sanctuary, hiding underneath pews, and exploring every nook and cranny of the building to the chagrin of the church custodian. As I grew older I served on my mom’s worship teams playing both flute and piano, singing, and eventually leading worship under her leadership and encouragement.

How I Learned To Honor My Mother

lessons-i-learned-button

“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.” (Exodus 12:20)

I remember the day I discovered the real Jesus. The One who actually had something to tell me and it started with “I have loved you with an everlasting love.” I was as excited as a child who had discovered a mountain of chocolate with a sign stuck in it instructing “Eat as much as you want” ! In the excitement of my new-found faith I rushed to tell my mom, who with tears streaming down her face, along with confusion, tried to understand what happened to her wild, rebellious, zealous daughter.

Celebrate!

I began with the “H” in royal blue across a square of white, my rainbow of classic Crayola markers splayed over the plush burgundy carpet. I smiled, imagining Mom’s delight when she spied it in the morning, my signature, block-bubble letters, surrounded by a wavy, drawn-ribbon border: Happy Birthday!

I taped the poster board in its traditional spot, above the doorway to the dining room, where all the delicious indulgence would occur. Next came assorted balloons with bold red curling ribbons cascading down.

She created them for all of us, a sign for every birthday growing up. I delighted in the task of creating hers.

Lessons I Learned From My Mother – Encouragement & Giveaways!

lessons-i-learned-button

“What is a godly mother? A godly mother is one who loves the Lord her God with all her heart, soul, mind, and strength and then passionately, consistently, and unrelentingly teaches her child to do the same.”

You may not be a mom, but you have a mom. Perhaps your own mom is an example of a Godly woman – one who set the atmosphere of love and peace in your home. Or, if you are like me, perhaps your mother does not know the Lord and your upbringing was not led by the Spirit of God. Or perhaps your relationship with your own mom is strained and is in need of healing and restoration.

A Whole Life of Adventure

This summer proves to be an exciting one for our family with multiple camping trips planned to destinations around the western United States. The thought is that we’ll catch campsites along the way, not often staying more than one night, and we’ll get a really broad experience — a big picture view of what there is to see.

Our first tour will be Utah’s National Parks. We’re hoping to see Zion, Arches, Moab, Mesa Verde and all points in between. Great fun, right? Hiking and exploring opportunities, photos to be taken, camping out under big starry skies — I imagine such bonding memories for the family.
