Look Up and Smile

A very dear friend just emailed this sweet story to me:

A Child’s View of Thunderstorms
A little girl walked to and from school daily. Though the weather that morning was questionable and clouds were forming, she made her daily trek to the elementary school. As the afternoon progressed, the winds whipped up, along with lightning. The mother of the little girl felt concerned that her daughter would be frightened as she walked home from school and she feared the electrical storm might harm her child.

Full of concern, the mother quickly got into her car and drove along the route to her child’s school.

Our Heavenly Teacher

This is what the Lord says – your Redeemer, the Holy one of Israel: “I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go. Isaiah 48:17

With summer break here in much of the United States, teachers and students alike are breathing a sigh of relief . . . thankful to leave the classroom for a couple of months. As a former teacher, I remember this time of year as being bitter sweet. I loved the slower pace of the summer, the extra time with my own children, and of course not having to head off to work every morning.

Beside Peaceful Waters

1 The Lord is my shepherd. I am never in need.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside peaceful waters.
3 He renews my soul. He guides me along the
paths of righteousness for the sake of his name.
4 Even though I walk through the dark valley of death,
because you are with me, I fear no harm.
Your rod and your staff give me courage.
5 You prepare a banquet for me while my enemies watch.
You anoint my head with oil. My cup overflows.
6 Certainly, goodness and mercy will stay close to me all the days of my life,
and I will remain in the Lord’s house for days without end.

Remember/Forget

Don’t you hate walking from one end of the house to the other and realizing you forgot why you were there?

Webster’s Dictionary defines remember this way: to bring to mind or think of again.

I also struggle with things I would like to forget, but find they pop into my mind with uninvited frequency.

Forget is defined: to be unable to think of or recall.

Our minds are miraculously complicated. I have so many things I would like to remember in detail, and just as many details that I wish I could forget. Since the clock continues to move ahead and I am not getting any younger, I’m afraid that this dilemma is not going to improve.

Celebrate

I read recently in Ladies Home Journal, that “the happiest husbands and wives were those who made the biggest deal out of good things that happened to them.” The lesson in this is: “it’s not enough that your spouse knows that you’re proud of his/her accomplishments. Making a fuss over the small, good things that happen every day can boost the health of your marriage.”

I completely agree! My dear husband and I have been together a little over forty years. (Yes, we were three and a half when we began dating. LOL) We love to rejoice over each other’s successes.

Hardest to Love

I keep a book at my desk titled, On Things That Really Matter, by H. Jackson Brown Jr. It is filled with thoughts and quotes. Whenever I find myself with a case of writer’s block, I flip open this little book and find words of inspiration. Today’s words came from an unnamed seventy nine year old individual: I’ve learned that . . . children need loving the most when they are the hardest to love.

That is a truism for everyone! I believe we each need the most love when we are the hardest to love. How blessed we are that God’s love is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

He Is Risen

The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; He has risen, just as He said. Come and see the place where He lay. Matthew 28:5-6

I have often tried to imagine that moment. The tidal wave of emotions that had to have flooded over the women.
* Fear – afterall it wasn’t everyday they met angels.
* Joy – that Jesus was alive!
* Anticipation – of seeing Him again.
* Doubt – that this was real and not just a dream or hallucination.

Keeping It Simple

All the nations you have made will come and worship before you, O Lord; they will bring glory to your name. For you are great and do marvelous deeds; you alone are God. Psalm 86:9-10

Have you thought about your purpose lately? Pastor Rick Warren has invited many of us to examine our purpose and allow it to guide our day. He says that we have been made for five purposes: 1. God’s Pleasure. 2. God’s Family. 3. To Be Christ-like. 4. To Serve God. 5. Missions.

I have determined that for me it comes down to only one purpose: To glorify God!
