“If I don’t have love, I am nothing.” 1 Corinthians 13:2 NIRV
Without love, nothing? Really?
Sigh…
The chapter goes on to teach us what love is and what it is not — love is patient, kind, not rude, does not insist on its own way, is not irritable or resentful, or easily angered
Sigh...
These last few weeks I’ve struggled with my determined child. In the height of emotion and frustration, anger words I can never regain — were released. And my actions and my words were contrary to the “is and nots” of love defined by His Word, by His life.

As a mom, I wish I could fix all of the issues my daughter has to face.
The dramas of growing up and fitting in.
Learning to control her emotions and behavior.
Figuring out how to live in this sinful world.
But even if I could solve everything, I know it wouldn’t be what’s best for her because there are lessons to be learned.
What I can do is be there for her.
And sometimes, that’s what she needs most—someone to listen and let her know her feelings are valid.
She wants to be heard. She wants to know I’m there for her no matter what.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. Ephesians 6:10-11
The words stab my heart and I stand, dumbstruck, stuck in the moment. Trapped by the sharpness piercing to my very core. “You want to know what they think of you?” The words continue without pause for an answer, “Well I’ll tell you, they think you’re a Jesus Freak, and annoying.” I am left speechless. I read Ephesians, chapter six, just this morning, yet I find my heart racing and eyes filling.

It’s these moments that can tug on a mother’s heart until it burns. Yet when it comes to our children, I’ve learned it never stretches far enough to break. It may lose its shape for awhile, but mostly our hearts just grow to fit it all in.
And I see his bottom lip give way to a quiver. His long lashes flutter repeatedly due to the frustration. It takes all I have in me not to scoop his four year-old frame right up and pour on the kind of love that tickles and makes you giggle until you burst into hiccups.

One of my all-time favorite quotes comes from four year old, Billy, who is definitely wise beyond his years.
When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You just know that your name is safe in their mouth.
Don’t you love it?
“Safe in their mouth.”
Don’t you want your name to be safe in someone’s mouth?
Think about it, when your name is safe….
- No secrets are betrayed.
- No rumors are spread.
- No lies are told.
- No cruelty is spoken.
- No anger is screamed.
- No ___________
You’re safe.
I want everyone I love to know their name is safe with me.

I was walking into the locker room at the gym the other day when a woman passed me, smiled, and said out of the blue,
“You’re pretty.”
I did sort of a double take, thinking she was talking to someone behind me, but there was nobody there.
By the time I realized she was talking to me, she’d turned the corner and disappeared.
There I was, in all my post-workout glory–sweaty, messy pony tail,
very less than pretty–
and yet,
that’s exactly what she said I was.
Those words from a total stranger made me smile (especially because I felt so un-pretty at the moment she said them).

I am pretty much one of those people whose energy levels stay depleted. I run on fumes about 85% of the times, and the other 15% I spend doing my best trying to just stay afloat when I am awake. I haven’t always been this way, and I thought for some time that I might just be sick or something. It wasn’t until I readIf You Have a Craving, I Have a Cureby Sheri Rose Shepherd that I realized my energy levels were like they were because I was not taking care of myself in a Godly way.

Sheri shares throughout this book, some very thought provoking things, but this chapter on energy is the one that really struck a chord with me and made me stop and think about what I am doing to my body.

“Relax, everything’s going to be all right; rest, everything’s coming together; open your hearts, love is on the way.” (Jude vs2 -The Message)
I love that! I stumbled upon that in the beginning of the new year and it is still calling to me today! In the introduction to the book of Jude in The Message Bible, Eugene Peterson writes that when we are sick physically, the pain draws our attention and we do what it takes to get well – but spiritually, we can be sick and unaware for a long time.
In our family, we are normally blessed with good health and a strong immune system, but over the holidays our little household was hit fast and hard with the flu bug.
