Who’s Your Audience?

Our youngest son Samuel has a few passions. One of those passions is Star Wars™. It is very common to find Samuel pretending to be Luke Skywalker with his sister and friends in tow. Samuel and his friends love to have their light sabers attached to their belt loops as they run all around the yard. Thanks to my six year old son, Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader have never been in such daunting situations.

Yesterday while the children were playing in our bonus room Samuel decided to try to copy a move he once saw Luke Skywalker make, a forward flip in the air with light saber in hand.

Be Still

My five-year-old daughter has quite a bit of energy. In fact, she almost never sits still. She is not the type to cuddle up on the couch and snuggle. She would much rather be running around the house or the yard. Many days I find myself saying to her, “would you please be still, just for a few minutes!” My husband says she’s just like me. She always has to be doing something.

A few days ago, she woke up early and came to my bedroom. I invited her to climb into my bed to snuggle. To my surprise, she did.

Help for the Wait

The other day I was standing in line at the grocery store when the person in front of me had an item that needed a price check.

This would’ve been fine, except for the fact that I had to go pick my kids up from school and I was worried about the time.

One minute passed.

Then two.

It seems like seconds ticked into forever as I stood in line, waiting.

After what seemed like an eternity, someone from the produce department located the price for the item and the person in front of me finished paying. I barely made it to my kids school on time.

Heaviness

I am in a place right now where I find myself often teetering on the fence between “fine” and “overwhelmed”. All too often, I’m struggling to overcome the heaviness life can bring. I suppose that isn’t too surprising with my 6 sons and their antics (especially those of a certain set of 3 year old twins) that constantly keep me on the edge of my seat.

But, I can guarantee you that there are days of heaviness in the lives of every woman I know. Doesn’t matter how perfect their life looks. Even the woman down the street with the perfect house, perfect lawn, perfect cars and perfect kids occasionally has days filled with heaviness.

Are You Satisfied?

What do you look to for satisfaction?

What do you spend your time thinking about, wanting, or striving after?

Is it money?

Relationships?

Food?

Shopping?

Or is it something else?

Wouldn’t it be great if we could all live our lives fully satisfied? Never wanting? Never feeling like we don’t have enough? Never feeling like we don’t do enough? Never feeling like we aren’t enough?

The song “These Hands” by Tenth Avenue North, asks the question:

Why are you still searching as if I’m not enough?

And isn’t that what we so often do? Look for our satisfaction in a variety of things other than God?

A Bitter Pill

According to a poster attached to our family pediatrician’s office wall, most children learn to swallow pills at five years of age. Add ten years to that number to learn how old I was before I could accomplish that task!

While most 15-year-olds were able to take two Tylenol tablets for a fever, I had to chew eight little salmon-colored St. Joseph’s baby aspirin to reduce a temperature of more than 100 degrees.

Finally, in my Nana’s kitchen the summer before my sophomore year of high school, I accomplished swallowing a doctor prescribed capsule. Now, with nearly 20-years of pill swallowing experience, I still struggle to get those little buggers down my throat.

Is It Possible to Please God?

Last time I talked about “Everything Being Meaningless” and concluded with this thought.

“Everything I’m striving for or wishing for or envious of is meaningless. Everything outside of Him (God) is meaningless. And I should keep my eye on Him, on pleasing Him.”

Which led me to the question I’m going to explore today. Is it possible to please God?

I started reading where I let off last time: Ecclesiastes 3

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven:
a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot,
a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build,
a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance,
a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain,
a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away,
a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak,
a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.

Dang it!

“So Moses brought Israel from the Red Sea; then they went out into the Wilderness…”
Exodus 15:22nkjv

When our oldest daughter was young, many of my friends complained about how their kids held them hostage by an annoying purple dinosaur on TV. While in my home, I was trying very hard not to dislike a deformed little Frenchman. The Disney movie, The Hunchback of Notre Dam was Meghan’s absolute favorite. No matter how many times I sat and watched it with her, how many times I wanted to scream from the sheer exhaustive repetition, there was always one scene that would make me laugh out loud.
