Trading Flaws for Grace

Kathy Cheek

I am flawed. Every day I miss the mark. Every day I lose patience and say things the wrong way which means I should not have said them at all.

I keep messing up. Last week I forgot to pray for someone I assured I would remember their prayer request. I saw her at church and the stress of her situation was written across her face and I was reminded that I need to pray. I was also reminded of my negligence.

I stand in the line at the grocery store and chit chat with the cashier or another person in line with me and forget to share the Lord in some way when God opens the door and gives me a moment to open my mouth and be a light in a dark world.

When Waiting for Answers and the Indwelling of Peace

Winter Sky

I cannot begin to remember and count all the different times I have wanted to know how God is working in and through a particular situation and also wanting to desperately know when I will have answers. I think it was my pattern for life especially as a younger Christian without a lot of spiritual growth under my belt, so to speak.

Too numerous to count are the times answers did not come on my timetable, but as I have walked longer with the Lord, I have learned more about the process of waiting. Learning about waiting is not an easy or pleasant experience.

Richly Blessed

Fall Street

When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
The moon and the stars, which You have ordained,
What is man that You are mindful of him,and the son of man that You visit him?
For You have made him a little lower than the angels,
And You have crowned him with glory and honor.

~ Psalm 8:3-5

I remember a day the sky was so blue it took my breath away, the sunrise so pink I could only stand in awe. The stars that night twinkled brighter than ever a night before, or so it seemed as I gazed enthralled by God’s awesome creation.

The Trouble With Circumstances

Lake Sunset

Today, I fought discouragement
Because I looked at me instead of God
I looked at circumstances
Instead of Him

But then, I fixed my gaze on Him
And by the time evening fell
Discouragement had also fallen away

Looking at our difficult circumstances can often get us into trouble. When we examine what is going on around us, it is easy to think this is bad, this is messed up, and there is no way this can be resolved. It is easy to fall into the trap of even saying to ourselves, I don’t see how God can work through this, or fix this.

Formula for Success

photo 3(51)

In the early years of marriage when the care of babies and young children kept me busy and often tired, I struggled to maintain a consistent daily schedule to read my Bible and spend time with the Lord in quiet conversation and prayer. I heard many, many messages and multiple formulas on the subject and was attempting to read my Bible through in a year, but was regularly falling behind and constantly experiencing guilt and discouragement.

Until I heard a lady in my Sunday school class share that she had just completed reading her entire Bible from cover to cover. She had five children and two were under the age of two, and she joyfully exclaimed, “It took me two whole years, but I read every word – cover to cover!”

Her praise report became a tremendous blessing in my life.

My Life Verses

My Life Verses

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge him and he shall direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV

My Life Verses are Proverbs 3:5-6. What are Life Verses? Simply, they are favored verses that hold a deep meaning to us. What do these verses mean to me? They are how I live my life. They guide my life. When I am faced with choices, struggles, and uncertainties—I run to these verses and apply them to each present situation.

Let’s look at these two verses a little closer today and how I have applied them to my life.
