God Is Like Colors

I remember a simple time a while back when God opened my eyes to the beauty of His creation through the eyes of my then 5 year old son.

I was driving my youngest two children to day care one day. I listened as they were having a conversation about God and what they thought He looked like. My then 8 year old daughter was telling my son that God had brown hair and blue eyes, and a beard, similar to the pictures we’ve all seen that depict Jesus. I glanced in the rear view mirror and waited for my son’s reaction. What he said brought a smile to my face…

He told his sister, “I think God is like colors, many many colors”. I realized at that moment that my son was able to see God through creation–how God made it–and has maybe even seen a glimpse of the eternal God, surrounded by light and colors.

I remember my drive into work that morning. I noticed the trees more, the birds, the hills. I took note of the morning beauty that surrounded me (that I often take for granted and miss).

I am so thankful that God did not create the world in black and white, but He added color. That color speaks of His creativity. He created all things for us to enjoy. So, the next time you find yourself asking, “What does God look like?,” step outside your door and look around. His beauty is everywhere.

Ask Him to open your eyes to His beauty today.

When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,4 what is man that you are mindful of him,
the son of man that you care for him? (Psalm 8:3-4 NIV)

The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands. (Psalm 19:1 – NIV)

    Love it! So very true that God is all around us and when we open our eyes to the beauty of the world we see God so much more clearly! Love that your son made note of that at such a young age.

    What a beautiful post, Barbie!! 😀
    Little ones are so precious! I love how they can sometimes “out smart” grown-ups. It just baffles me. 🙂

    Love the word picture. I definitely see God in ‘colors’ and creation. One of the things I miss most about living in the Northwest is the contrast between the seasons and seeing God reveal Himself in the ever-changing kaleidescope.
