What Does God Require of Me

What are your talents? This is a question I’ve been pondering about myself lately. For a stay-at-home mom, I am very homemaking-challenged. Cooking? Not really. I can boil water and follow a simple recipe (which is more than I can say for when I first married.) Baking? Um, no. Not unless I have a mix. Sewing? Definitely not! I tried, really I did. Unfortunately, that gene seems to have skipped me entirely and gone to my oldest daughter who’s actually a pretty good seamstress.

So, I’ve been thinking about what my talents could be. So far, I’m still not sure. And sometimes this makes me wonder how well am I doing. How do I measure up?

But, I began thinking about this from a different perspective. What does God require of me? What does He want me to be good at doing? What does He want me to use my talents for? And, this passage came to mind:

8 He has showed you, O man, what is good.
And what does the LORD require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 5:8

It seems so simple. Instead of my long list that I often want to use to measure “how well I’m doing,” God has a relatively short list here of what He requires. God requires only this: that I act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with Him. No cooking, baking, or sewing required. What a relief!

Thanks for this post. Just found this blog and this post was very encouraging. As we begin a new year, I find I can easily set myself up not just with a list of new goals(which are not inherently bad in of themselves), but also a set of expectations that are often unrealistic and overwhelming. God’s plan is refreshingly simple and freeing. Thanks for the reminder.

P.S. I believe the verse reference should have been Micah 6:8.
