I needed a word from the Lord about my writing, my relationships, my life. When I cracked the Bible, the book fell open to Ecclesiastes 1:1 and I started reading.
“Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher. “Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.”
Okaaay… Not the answer I was expecting so I read on.
“What does man gain from all his labor at which he toils under the sun? Generations come and generations go, but the earth remains forever…All things are wearisome, more than one can say. The eye never has enough of seeing, nor the ear its fill of hearing. What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.

I read recently in Ladies Home Journal, that “the happiest husbands and wives were those who made the biggest deal out of good things that happened to them.” The lesson in this is: “it’s not enough that your spouse knows that you’re proud of his/her accomplishments. Making a fuss over the small, good things that happen every day can boost the health of your marriage.”
I completely agree! My dear husband and I have been together a little over forty years. (Yes, we were three and a half when we began dating. LOL) We love to rejoice over each other’s successes.

There’s a little town next door to ours that lays claim to “the highest per capita income” in the state. Now I’m not really sure of that statistic–I can think of a few other places with just as few “shoddy” neighborhoods and just as many chic inhabitants–but that’s what they believe of themselves to some extent.
We like visiting the downtown area because there are cute shops and wide, tree-lined walks with lots of street-side dining. It’s a relaxing place to spend an afternoon or get an ice cream after dinner.
One aspect I am less impressed with though, is the driving.

I started on my writing journey enthusiastic, bright-eyed and hopeful. That was six years ago. Now, at times I’m weary, blurry-eyed, and discouraged. Why?
What takes a determined person and zaps the life from her dreams? Is it the struggles we face along the way? The obstacles we must overcome? Or is it the lack of results?
While I’ve had successes in my writing career, I’m starting to wonder if it’s enough to sustain me.

Do you ever feel overwhelmed with life or with what God has called you to do? If so, you are not alone. When Moses encountered God in the burning bush and God revealed to him his assignment, Moses was overwhelmed too.

Because of My Story

My husband has often said, “I wish I had a testimony–a story–like yours.”
And I’ve said back to him, “I would rather to have had a family like yours and no testimony to share.”
When I was five years old, my dad left me and my sisters. When he did, our mother left us emotionally. Their divorce was devastating and from then on, emptiness and questions would follow me all the way into my adult years.
I heard a speaker once say, “Instead of writing off our past, or discounting it, we should authenticate the role it has played in our life.”

How quickly I forget the blessings of life.
When I think back to my childhood and through the years, what comes to mind?
The hard times.
The hurts and pain.
People who wronged me.
Why is that? Why is it so easy to remember the bad times and so hard to conjure up memories of good? Are you this way too?
The Israelites, whom God had chosen and loved, battled the same thing.
“So, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the desert, where your fathers tested and tried me and for forty years saw what I did.

Are you worrying about something right now?
One of my favorite verses in the Bible is Matthew 25:6-34…
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?”
