On Days It Pays To Walk Away

So shall the king greatly desire your beauty: since he is your Lord, worship him.
Psalm 45:1

I pulled into the beach parking lot at six in the morning. I knew that my regular walking partner would not be there, but another friend had mentioned joining me, so I made sure to show up. I sat in my car, opened the small devotional I had brought along for just such a waiting moment and I waited.

By 6:15 it was clear that for reasons unknown to me, my friend was not coming. I smiled and stepped out of my car, breathing in the glorious morning.

How I Learned To Honor My Mother

lessons-i-learned-button

“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.” (Exodus 12:20)

I remember the day I discovered the real Jesus. The One who actually had something to tell me and it started with “I have loved you with an everlasting love.” I was as excited as a child who had discovered a mountain of chocolate with a sign stuck in it instructing “Eat as much as you want” ! In the excitement of my new-found faith I rushed to tell my mom, who with tears streaming down her face, along with confusion, tried to understand what happened to her wild, rebellious, zealous daughter.

Are You Ready To Face The Day?

Every day we are faced with a myriad of choices. We choose everything from our simple breakfast at home to the specific details of our coffee order at Starbucks. Still the most important choices we make are not what we choose at the breakfast table or the coffee shop, but instead, those choices which impact our inner person, and if neglected have far greater consequences than a poor breakfast choice or high priced beverage at Starbucks.

So today’s menu is fare for your inner man. The one that is craving more than a bagel and latte. Nutrition for the soul and nourishment to carry you through the day as well as “to infinity and beyond!”,

When Those You Love Don’t Love Jesus

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. Ephesians 6:10-11

The words stab my heart and I stand, dumbstruck, stuck in the moment. Trapped by the sharpness piercing to my very core. “You want to know what they think of you?” The words continue without pause for an answer, “Well I’ll tell you, they think you’re a Jesus Freak, and annoying.” I am left speechless. I read Ephesians, chapter six, just this morning, yet I find my heart racing and eyes filling.

Many are the plans in a  man’s heart , but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails. (Proverbs 19:21)

So here it is a new year and you are adding more and more to that list of things you want to accomplish than you ever intended. Everywhere you turn there is a new suggestion and they all sound good, helpful and deep inside you do want to improve in the area mentioned. Well before you take on one more thing, might I suggest the one thing that might help you along all of the paths you have chosen?

A Very Theatrical Christmas Tradition {God Bless Us, Everyone}

“For it is good to be children sometimes, and never better than at Christmas, when its mighty Founder was a child Himself.” ~Charles Dickens

“Marley was dead: to begin with.”  Thus begins the first lines of the opening scene in the annual presentation of The Christmas Carol  and also a very unexpected but cherished family tradition. For the past eight years our little family of three has set off for a night of theatre, forsaking the hustle and bustle of the holiday noise to sit and be told the classic tale written by Charles Dickens in 1843.

Each year the play is presented in a different way and people from all walks of life and persuasion join in to enjoy the timeless message which never fails to touch and tenderize my heart to tears.

Are We Just Going Through The Motions

There I am watching from a distance.
I’m watching myself as a stranger.
I am like one who seems aloof. Distracted.

I’ve done my list today.
The dishes have been done, bed made, laundry washed, dried and folded.
Phone calls and e-mails have been returned.
I’ve done all of the things that needed to get done this day.

I am sitting with my family at the dinner table.
My dear husband is serving me a portion of the dish he has made for us.
I look around the table.
I realize I have been watching myself all day but not fully aware.
