Listening And Obeying The First Time

If you are a parent, there are probably some things your children do that drive you absolutely crazy! I know there are lots of things mine do that sometimes cause me to want to scream. I love them with all my heart, but they sure can frustrate me at times. One of the biggies at our house is ignoring someone when they are speaking to you. This usually only happens when the television is on.

Recently, I had to call my son five times before I had his full attention. He answered me on the third attempt, but still did not fully comprehend what I was instructing him to do until the fifth time.

Questions

I struggle with lots of things in my life; my weight, certain family relationships, feeling like I’m keeping up with everything that needs to be done, but there are some days these things are OK. I am at peace with them, and it doesn’t feel like a constant battle. However, the one thing I am always fighting against is the sense of helplessness and loss of control over my son’s seizures. It’s always nagging at the back of my mind. I’m always questioning, will he have a seizure today? If so, will we go to the hospital? Should we change his meds?

Understanding His Voice

As I walked with my son and our service dog through the airport, a little boy about three years old came over to pet our dog. He was chattering away trying to carry on a conversation the entire time he patted her head. I’m not sure if he was speaking to me or the dog; but either way, I didn’t understand a word he said.

His mom finally came to my rescue and began to interpret. The little boy wasn’t speaking a foreign language; I just couldn’t understand him. But his mother understood everything he was saying perfectly. She had spent enough time with him to be able to decipher his toddler language.

Gaining Through Losing

I was reading a book a friend of mine wrote today and one of his statements jumped off the page at me. “Gaining through losing isn’t fun.” It was one of those statements I had to dwell on a few moments and allow it to roll around in my head for a little while. In his circumstance, my friend was referring to a sickness that cost him a great deal of his brain function, and what he had gained as a result of that loss.

As I pondered his words, I considered David and Goliath and the slingshot David used to kill Goliath.

A Braveboy From Coward

Many of us will celebrate Memorial Day today with a cookout, picnic or parade. Kids are excited because it marks the end of school. Adults are excited because it usually means a day off work. But many have lost sight of what Memorial Day actually means. Originally called Decoration Day, it is a day to honor and remember those who have died in our nation’s service. It is a day to celebrate those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

Many have family members who have served or are currently serving in our armed forces. I’m sure there are many stories that could be told to honor them.

Fly Like An Eagle

“You are so strong.” It’s a comment I get quite often when my son ends up in the hospital with health challenges as a result of his epilepsy as he did once again this past week. Friends will say they don’t know how I do it. I often will respond by letting people know I absolutely couldn’t do it if it weren’t for the great God I serve. He is where my strength comes from. He is the one who lifts me up when I feel like I’m falling. Becoming strong in Him however, is sometimes not a fun process. It’s sort of like a baby eagle learning to fly.

Good Fortune

Mark 16:15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.”

Is America in constant need of good news? It seems all we ever see on television is bad news. I’m not one for watching the news everyday, because almost every story reported is full of turmoil and tragedy. However, I do try to stay abreast of current events. I read a magazine called The Week, which touts itself as containing “all you need to know about everything that matters.” It highlights major stories covered in the United States and International Media. In addition to the top news stories, it usually contains a few human interest type stories as well as the latest in film, travel, leisure, music, books, and business.

Just Like the Disciples

Do you ever have difficulty believing something you know Christ has promised? Perhaps you have heard Him whisper, “you will have that child you so desperately want, just wait” or “your marriage is not over, trust me” or “I will provide for you, you will have everything you need.” Sometimes we think the things He has promised us, the things we dream of, just can’t possibly be true. Then we feel like second rate Christians, not worthy of carrying His name and promise to the lost. We think, “If I can’t trust Him, how can I be worthy to ask anyone else to?”
