A Good Night’s Sleep

Have you ever had a hard time sleeping? Have you ever lay awake at night, tossing and turning and staring at the ceiling?

Whether it’s brought on by things like worry, too much caffeine, little kids keeping you up, or sickness, everyone has a sleepless night now and then.

Earlier this year, I went through a period of several sleepless nights in a row, along with migraines. I’d never experienced either before, and it left me discouraged and wondering if I’d ever feel “normal†again.

Those nights were hard. My husband was on a business trip and it seemed like morning would never come.

But there was one thing that made it easier: prayer

I would pray and focus on verses like:

“Come to me all you who are weary and carrying heavy burdens and I will give you rest.†Matthew 11:28

And…

“Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.†1 Peter 5:7

And…

“God says, I will never leave you or abandon you.†Hebrews 13:5

And maybe the one that helped me the most…

“I will lie down and sleep in peace, because you, oh Lord, make me dwell in safety.†Psalm 4:8

I found out later that I’d been grinding my teeth in my sleep, and after I got a mouth guard from my dentist, the headaches ended and I started to feel like myself again. And though that time period was no fun, the experience made me more grateful than ever for my faith and for the comfort and strength that God provides.

So if you ever have a hard time sleeping, meditate on God’s promises.

And find rest in His love.

Yes, I’m plagued with insomnia about once a month for three or four nights in a row. After months of dreading it and fighting it, I’ve finally come to a place of peace about it. It is my incredible, deep time with the Lord, and even throughout the day, I’m completely dependent on Him because I’m so tired. Great post.
