Give It To Him

M.J. Corrales

These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace.
In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer.
I have overcome the world. (John 16:33 NKJV)

When was the last time you were slapped in the face with God’s truth? Oh, sure, we read about it in the Bible, sit in church and Sunday School and listen to it every week, and perhaps even have a daily quiet time when we study it. But when was the last time the truth in the Scripture jumped up and hit us right where we live?

I was wrestling with a situation at work recently while driving home, and playing it over and over again in my mind. What can I do? What should I do? How can I bear it? All of these questions and answers and questions and no answers went round and round in my head. You know what I mean; we’ve all been there. Trying to solve the unsolvable, reason out the unreasonable. Then the headache starts, a pain that even aspirin won’t take away. When we try to solve our problems our way, don’t we just make a bigger mess of it? Why won’t we ever learn? Ah, easy to say, tough to do.

On this particular day, working this particular problem over and over again in my mind, the Christian radio station I listen to started playing the opening notes of “Amazing Grace-My Chains Are Gone.” The music just flooded into me and stilled all of my turmoil. I was almost embarrassed to have thought I could even fix the situation myself. The good Lord was right there all the time. I knew that; why didn’t I know that? In that moment, when that beautiful song started playing, it was as if God had reached down and said, Give it to Me, dear one. I can handle it.

So I gave it to Him. I didn’t have to continue being frustrated about it, to continue worrying about the “unfairness” of the situation. (When did the Lord ever promise “fairness” in this life, anyway?) But He had it now, and He could certainly take care of it.

We just have to work for His glory and not let those worrisome details of everyday life get to us. He told us in His word we would have trials and tribulations, but He also told us He has overcome the world. So we need to give them to God. Lay them on the altar. And then work on not taking them back!

Lord, when we give it all to You, help us be trusting enough of Your sovereignty to resist picking our troubles back up. Help us to lay them on Your altar and leave them there. Amen.

Amen! I am amazed that this lesson needs to be taught to me over and over again. It is so funny that we know God will take our burdens, but I am always blown away that he does. Thanks for the devotion and reminder that He is there.
