A Light Unto My Path

Psalm 119:105 Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. (NIV)

Often when I am traveling through the dark streets at night to return to my home in the country, I am struck by the overwhelming darkness around me. Far away from the city, there are few street lights, and the light from my headlights often seems small and insignificant in the deep darkness.

But, as I drive that light goes before me, lighting only the road immediately in front of me. The light shines just on the part of the road I need to see right now. Only as I move forward in the light I can see, does the light continue to move in front of me, lighting up the road further along.

Often God lights my way in the same way that those headlights light the road. I would like for the light to be bright, to shine around and light up everything, so I can see the way stretching before me. But more often God’s direction shines just on the little bit of path before me, lighting only the way immediately in front of me. As I walk in faith, God leads me little by little, showing me only what I need to know right now for this time.

Not until I step out, following His day by day guidance, do I see more and more of what He would have me to do. Sometimes, I may not know what will be down the road. Often, I will not see yet what the end will be. But, as I trust God day to day and follow where He leads me one step at a time, He will continue to be a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
