Loving Jesus

They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the created thrings rather than the Creator which is forever praised. Amen. Romans 1:25

When my oldest son was seven he said to me “Mommy, sometimes it’s hard to love Jesus more than you.” He also told me his teacher said some kids love God but they don’t love him with all their heart. He didn’t know if he loved God with all his heart.

Over the years my other children have said similar things to me, and I understood completely what they meant. It’s easier to love and desire the things that are here and visible. I know from experience. Even as an adult, I know that I could love God more. Many times my actions say I love “other things” more. Computer, friends, even food.

My seven-year-old wanted to love Jesus more. “The more we know someone, the more we love them,” I said. “To grow to love Jesus more, you need to spend time with him, pray and talk to him more.”

How simple an answer. How hard for me to follow my own advice.

So true. Sometimes I have thanked God for making life so filled with difficulty that it has forced me to my knees. I thank Him and all that when things seem to be going well. But when life is scary, that’s when I need to lie down at his feet and rest in his presence. Not easy. Never perfect. Good thing He understands our frail humanity.

Kids are such great teachers. And they bring up the best questions – they’re not worried about “sounding righteous” in what they say.

    Hi Gina,
I just wanted to tell you how much your message about “loving jesus more” meant to me. I am a 36 year old mother of a very active 3 year old. I was born and raised Catholic and this past year became a Christian. This was long over due and I am still a work in progress. I struggle with what you are writing about all the time because I have so many distractions. I feel that your message was so true and will most likely hit everyone of us working toward that personal relationship with the Lord. Thank you.
