Understanding His Voice

As I walked with my son and our service dog through the airport, a little boy about three years old came over to pet our dog. He was chattering away trying to carry on a conversation the entire time he patted her head. I’m not sure if he was speaking to me or the dog; but either way, I didn’t understand a word he said.

His mom finally came to my rescue and began to interpret. The little boy wasn’t speaking a foreign language; I just couldn’t understand him. But his mother understood everything he was saying perfectly. She had spent enough time with him to be able to decipher his toddler language.

Do you ever feel like you need an interpreter for what God is saying to you? He is always speaking and working in things that happen all around us. But sometimes, we aren’t sure whom He’s talking to or if it’s even Him speaking. And, when we think it’s us he’s speaking to, we sometimes don’t understand what He’s saying.

Like Samuel as a child, when I hear his voice, I don’t want to assume it’s someone else calling, but I want to say, “Speak Lord, your servant is listening.” And then I want to have spent enough time with Him to be able to understand what He’s saying.

The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” 1 Samuel 3:10

Thanks for this….sometimes it’s easy to let our personal, quiet time with Him go, but if we do that, then how can we hear his voice? Thanks for that reminder.

I always felt the same way but never knew how to put it into words. Thank you for expressing communication with the Lord much better for me.

I love this post. I crave clarity as I get to know God more. Sometimes I wonder if He just wants to know we are listening.
