Praise in the Midst of Storms

The song, Praise You in This Storm, by Casting Crowns, always chokes me up…

“I was sure by now
that You would have reached down
and wiped our tears away,
stepped in and saved the day,
but once again,
I say “Amen”,
and it’s still raining…â€

Not too long ago, I wrote a devotion about control and how awesome it is to surrender control to God.

But what if you do that and it feels like nothing gets better? What if, like it says in the song, it’s “still rainingâ?

There have been times I’ve witnessed people going through extreme hardship or tragedy and I’ve thought to myself, “if I was going through that, would I still trust God as much as I do now?†And I have to admit, sometimes I’ve been unsure of the answer.

But then I think of the man at our church who was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and said, “I can choose to be angry at God, or I can love Him and show my kids how to die with dignity.†He did the latter. And I think of his wife, who spoke after his death and said her faith was stronger than ever. Through her loss and pain, and in the middle of her terrible storm, she praised God and expressed deep thanks for the hope of Heaven and His loving hand in her life and in the lives of her kids. She said she wouldn’t know what to do without God’s love.

And thinking of that family reminds me that, even though life will bring troubles, God promises that He will never leave us or forsake us. He can carry us through those troubles if we let him.

If we put our faith in something that falters, it doesn’t do us much good when times get tough. But putting our faith in God can make all the difference in the world. Because He never falters. And even when we don’t get the answers that we want, or the quick-fixes that we hope for, He is a rock that we can count on in good times and bad. He…

“gives strength to the weary and increases power to the weak.†Isaiah 40:29

And, like the lyrics of Casting Crown’s song say, he never, ever leaves our side…

“I’ll praise You in this storm
and I will lift my hands
for You are who You are
no matter where I am.
Every tear I’ve cried
you hold in Your hand
you never left my side,
and though my heart is torn,
I will praise You in this storm.â€

Beautiful Genny. I know that when I just focus on God’s love and His sovereignty, I find it so much easier to praise Him through the storms because good will come from it.

Going through difficulties at home right now and that song speaks to me, I cry when I here the lyrics. I try and focus on the fact God has gotten me this far and I know the out come will be for the good of my family, but I had one of those days yesterday and was just sad. I feel better cause I let it out, now I have let this experience get me closer to God not turn away from him and that is what trials are supposed to do.

This is beautiful. I guess it’s easy to believe and to praise when things are going well. it’s when the troubles come that we see what our faith is really made of. I have faltered so much but even then God works. I have learned that even when I have come thisclose to abandoning my faith He has still carried me and worked good. He is truly amazing and miraculous and worthy of all praise.

He’s the only thing that keeps me together through the storms. Thank you so much for the reminder.

During the most difficult trial in my life, I did have a period of anger at God. That brought along all kids of feelings of guilt, shame, questioning of faith. It proved to be a great opportunity for the enemy to creep in!
Even when it is so dark and so hard, He is what we have to continue to cling to and often, it does have to be a deliberate decision to remain steadfast in Him!
    Thanks for this!

What a wonderful and clear reminder to praise him in the storm. He is so faithful and loving and patient and strong, its a good opportunity to learn and dwell on his characteristics now so that we truly know the Rock to which we cling during those tough times. Thanks Genny.

Just this morning, I thought of a song I hadn’t heard in years….

He never said you only see sunshine,
He never said there would be no rain.
He only promised a heart full of singing
About the very thing that once brought pain.

Give them all, give them all, give them all to Jesus
Shattered dreams, wounded hearts, and broken toys.
Give them all, give them all, give them all to Jesus
And He will turn your sorrows into joy.
