A Good Report

Oftentimes, when my husband leaves for work in the morning, he will tell the kids that he wants “a good report” when he gets home. It is, as you can imagine, always very helpful to me as I can remind the kids of dad’s words throughout the day.

No, my sons; it is not a good report that I hear spreading among the Lord’s people. 1 Samuel 2:24

There was a man in the Bible, a priest, who did not get a good report about his sons while he was away. Eli, the priest over Samuel, found out that his sons were not honoring God in their offerings and they were also sleeping with women who served at the Tent of Meeting. There was a specific law in Deuteronomy 23:17 that spoke specifically against this.

In my husband’s and my effort as a pastor and pastor’s wife, it is really easy to neglect our responsibility at home with our kids. I am sure you can relate to this whether you are in the ministry or not; there is always work to be done in the church, not to mention in all the areas of our life. Eli’s sin was that “he failed to restrain his sons” while they were in his care. Eli’s household was under God’s condemnation for Eli’s neglect of his family.

While we have a loving, forgiving and merciful God, God is all about not neglecting our family. We can be so busy, being His hands and feet, that we do not take good care of the priceless children God has put in our hands. Not only do we want a good report from our own children each day, God wants a good report from us as parents while our children are in our care. So, let’s honor Him this day so our house will be firmly established by our loving, and always Present Father. Let’s give him a good report each and every day!

I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who will do according to what is in my heart and mind. I will firmly establish his house, and he will minister before my anointed one always. 1 Samuel 2:35
