Why Does God Care?

“What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?
You made him a little lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and honor
and put everything under his feet.” Hebrews 2:7-8

In my finite mind, I cannot imagine what makes God love the human race so much. We’re a bunch of bumbling, fallen, baboons, yet he loves us anyway. We sin over and over and over again, yet he forgives us each time. We’re a stubborn and prideful race, yet he is patient and waits for us.

What made Him offer a fallen people forgiveness and redemption through the sacrifice of His own son, someone a little lower than the angels? What caused Him to extend his mercy and forgiveness to us, but overlook the fallen angels? Why love this creation so much?

I don’t have to have the answers to these questions to appreciate the gift God has given me. I’m glad God offers His love and mercy to humanity, to me. For who am I without my creator? Just a lump of unformed clay.

My son loves to work with his hands. To create art from nothing and when He is finished he can’t bear to throw anything away. Is that How God feels about us? As He molds us does something stir inside Him, a feeling of pride and admiration? As He looks upon our imperfections does He long for us to be perfect, and instead of giving up, toils endlessly? At some point does He become accepting of our flawed state, but cherishes us anyway?

I don’t know what God sees in us, the love and grace He extends to us in incomprehensible, something not of this world. Something only God can give and the reason why He does, remains a blessed mystery.

I love that we can’t figure God out! I love the mysteries! And I love that His grace is new every morning!
