Looking for Wisdom? Just Ask…

Several years ago, when I was pregnant with our daughter, my husband and I started looking at new homes. We loved our house and neighbors, but with a baby on the way, we felt like we needed a home with a bigger backyard and a little more privacy. After looking for a while, we found a home we thought was perfect…it was on a court, with a swimming pool in the backyard, and plenty of room.

But there was one catch.

If we bought the house, and I quit my job to stay home with our daughter when she was born, things would be tight financially.

We debated whether or not we should move.

I know the answer should’ve been easy–forget the new house, bypass the stress, and be happy with what you have. But I have to admit, I had visions of moving into that beautiful home and setting up the nursery. Many times, I tried to tell myself that it wouldn’t be stressful if we moved.

But my husband and I just weren’t sure. We didn’t want to make a bad decision.

One night, after we talked about what we should do, I pulled out my Bible and, before I opened it, I literally prayed this… “Okay, God. It seems like this new house is perfect for us. If it’s your plan that we move there, then please, please make it clear. And if you want us to stay here and not buy the house, then let us know that too.â€

I opened my Bible, and it just so happened that this is the exact verse I opened to:

“Sometimes there is a way that seems to be right, but in the end it is the way to death.†Proverbs 16:25

And that was the answer. It couldn’t get any clearer.

We weren’t buying the new house.

The next day, when we followed-up with our real estate agent, we told her we decided not to move. And looking back now, almost ten years later, I’m so grateful for the way God answers prayers. And the way He gives wisdom. Because I can see now that everything turned out exactly how it was supposed to. My husband and I had both of our kids in that first house, I quit my job and stayed home with them, and several years later, we were able to move to a new home that I’m sure is exactly where God wants us to be.

So the next time you’re facing a decision—whether it’s a big one or a little one—don’t forget to ask God for direction first. Because, as it says in James 1:5…

“But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously.â€

And in Jeremiah 33:3…

“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.â€

God will give you wisdom in all of the decisions you face.

All you have to do is ask.

This is such a great reminder for me. Sometimes I want something so bad, I don’t realize that it may not be God’s will for us.

WOW, what a powerful post. I love the scriptures you referenced. So many times I forget to turn things over to Him.

Genny, this has reminded me of our decision to move….move from one church to another. We felt God leading us elsewhere, but didn’t want to leave without His confirmation of direction. One morning I cried out to the Lord to speak His will to us. I opened up my Bible in Micah and read, “Arise and depart, this is not your place of rest.” God clearly told us the time was now.

We have such a personal God who longs to show us His way, if we would just ask, listen and expect then obey.

    Following Him,
