Quench Your Thirst

Yesterday, when I dropped my daughter off at her two-hour cheerleading practice, I sent her with a huge bottle of water. And because it was so hot outside, I packed one for myself too.

After dropping her off, I went to the community center down the street to get some writing done.

About an hour later, when I lifted my water bottle to take a sip, I realized I’d already finished it. And when I picked up my daughter at the end of her practice, hers was empty too.

In the heat, we’d polished them off. But, we were still thirsty.

And that’s how it is with life sometimes.

We may get thirsty, wanting more–whether it’s more love or money or whatever–and we set out to “fill our bottlesâ€. But, unless we fill them with God, it will never seem like enough.

We’ll still be thirsty.

Because nothing satisfies like Him.

In John 7:37…
Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.â€

Money, attention, and material things may be exciting. And they can make us feel good for a while. Self-help books and motivational fads come and go, and while they might make a difference in people’s lives, they can’t fill the God-shaped hole that only He can. After a while, the excitement of these kinds of things goes away. The newness fades. And you’re back to where you started.

It’s not like that with God, though.

“For He satisfies the longing soul, and fills the hungry soul with goodness.†Psalm 107:9

His love is like clear, refreshing water that never stops flowing once you let it in.

After many years of believing, I’m still amazed at the new ways God continues to touch my life. I’m in awe of the way He can move me to tears through music. And the way He inspires me through nature. And the way, every time I’m at church or reading my bible, I learn something, the very thing I need to know at that moment in time.

But mostly, I’m amazed at the way He has filled my life. And quenched my thirst.

Like nothing else ever could.

My youngest brother recently moved up here w/ his family (they are not believers yet) and they joined us and our friends at the park the other day. When everyone else had left, my brother told me that I was completely different… that it was like I had done a 180 in last 5 years.I am so thankful that He does fill us, my life was a lot different w/o Him. I was hungry for somthin for a long long time; and the things I filled my cup with never did satisfy.

Nothing can fill me like HE does. Jesus satisfies me as all other things on only temporal–money, food, clothes, etc. Great post.

Thank you for your words and reminders on Gods love. I never knew that I could feel God as deeply as I do. He has become my solid rock and shield against the firery arrows. But most of all, he has become my best friend. I get to know him more and more every day as I study his words.
