Making a difference…

Do you want to make an impact for God, but aren’t sure how to?

Do you look at others who are serving and wish you felt more qualified to make a difference too?

About ten years ago, I felt a nudging to get involved as a mentor to teen moms through Youth for Christ. At the time, I was a new mom myself. My daughter was only a few months old and my son wasn’t even born yet. As I considered becoming a mentor, I doubted whether I should. After all, who was I to help other moms when I was still learning myself?

But the nudging wouldn’t go away.

And in spite of my fears and feelings of inadequacies, I signed up with Mentor Moms.

Looking back, after all these years, I now know why I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was meant to get involved: It was because God wanted to use me. Not to be an example of a “perfect mom” or a “parenting expert”, because, believe me, I’ve never been either. Not to tell those girls how to get their babies to sleep through the night or how to deal with temper tantrums, either.

God just wanted me to come alongside those young moms and let them know He loves them.

Sometimes, we hold off on getting involved and serving because we doubt our abilities or our qualifications. But…

“Jesus has the power of God, by which he has given us everything we need to live and to serve God. We have these things because we know him. “ 2 Peter 1: 3-4

It’s as simple as that: Jesus qualifies us.

The verse doesn’t say He has given us some of what we need to live and to serve. It says He has given us everything we need.

So as we remember His amazing sacrifice on the cross, and as we celebrate the joy of Easter this weekend, let’s not forget that.

Let’s serve others in love, even if it means trying something new or stepping out of our comfort zones.

“…and to your service for God, add kindness for your brothers and sisters in Christ; and to this kindness, add love.” 2 Peter 1: 7

What about you? Is there an area you’ve wanted to serve in, but haven’t felt qualified? Or is there a time you can share when you stepped out in faith to serve?
