Are You Laboring Today?

Today many are celebrating Labor Day and enjoying a day off from their normal work week. Some have been looking forward to this long holiday weekend, because it provides an opportunity for rest, and rest is what many are seeking. But they are also seeking a full life, which is why they labor so hard. I was helping my son look up some information on the history of Labor Day and this is what we found on History.com.

“As the Industrial Revolution took hold of the nation, the average American in the late 1800s worked 12-hour days, seven days a week in order to make a basic living. Children were also working, as they provided cheap labor to employers and laws against child labor were not strongly enforced.

With the long hours and terrible working conditions, American unions became more prominent and voiced their demands for a better way of life. On Tuesday, September 5, 1882, 10,000 workers marched from city hall to Union Square in New York City, holding the first-ever Labor Day parade.” Twelve years later in 1894, Congress made Labor Day a federal holiday.

The people wanted a better way of life, which translated to less work hours. It’s funny that today most people think a better way of life comes from more work hours. Rest is something many seek, but few are willing to take time to do. It’s assumed in order to find a better way of life; one must work, work, work, and never rest. If you rest, you fall behind in the race with the Jones’. You must work harder so you can have a bigger house, a new car, more stylish clothes. In chasing after those things, one becomes weary, for it’s an ongoing thirst that is never quenched. When we try to satisfy our desires with earthly things, our labor is in vain.

Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain… In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat, for he grants sleep to those he loves. Psalm 127:1-2

The great news is there is a way you can have “a better life” and rest. It’s through Christ. He offers this invitation.

Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy-laden and overburdened, and I will cause you to rest. [I will ease and relieve and refresh your souls.] Matthew 11:28 (Amplified Bible)

I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of. John 10:6 (The Message)

Why not cease laboring today and come find rest in the One who can relieve and refresh your soul and give you a better life than you ever imagined.

Awesome Amy…Are you resting? I’m blessed not stressed and found REST …in the arms of Jesus! Thank you for putting together all the historical data on Labor day but the spiritual ones were so much better!(lol) Bless you for the scripture verses because I really could use some REST! I had been struggling with weariness and fatigue for no real reason since my return from my 1,500 mile trip to the border of Mexico and USA for my permit. I had a heaviness in my spirit and it would not break. I believe after last week, I made some breakthrough and now I’m on a new mission! Come see my PRAYER focus and my
new Monday meme…I think you have a worthwhile purpose to post. Post and link and
write in Signs…that you’ll be back later to post about YOURs…stay tune!!! Because I
know that you are RESTING!!! Take care of yourself, Spencer, Greg and Mary Lyndsey!

    Dear Amy,
Those Scriptures you quoted make my eyes want to well up with tears! As a mother of 3 girls (6, 3, and 9 months) and we just found out on Friday that we are expecting another one..rest is something, well, I HAVE to work at! To be honest, ladies, I fight this battle everyday. Can anyone else relate to a house that never seems “clean” or picked up no matter how hard you try? Can anyone else relate to a day beginning around 6am or earlier and you find yourself during the day holding your bladder so that you can get one more thing done or attend to someone else’s need? Can anyone else relate to being so terribly exhausted at night but cant really remember anything that you have accomplished other than getting everyone up dressed and fed?!! (Hey, that is a pretty good accomplishment in itself!!)
Listen I am not saying all of this for self-pity..after all, Jesus tells us in the Bible to die to self everyday (AS mothers we are an automatic shoe-in!!). What I am saying, or really asking, do any other moms have to MAKE themselves take some time to rest? I find that when I do.. I am at so much more at peace…the peace that Amy describes above.
I know, deep down, that our Father does not want us to run around like crazy people trying to do “more”…for really what purpose? Thank-you Amy, for reminding me, that it is in Jesus alone that we find not only a peace that strengthens us, but a life that is better than we could have ever imagined!

The verse from Matthew has been floating around in my head all day today and I find it repeated here. I think the best and most refreshing rest we can get is to rest in the presence of the Lord. I think your post captures the true spirit of Labor Day!

I so easily get caught in the work, work, work mode. Even trying to work to earn His love! I am so glad I cannot earn it or lose it! Now just to get myself to rest in His love!!! 🙂

At nine months pregnant… I wish I was laboring! 🙂

Great post. I can relate to Amy… I have a 6, 4 and a 2 plus my hubby and a house and this baby belly and a business and ministry and homescholing and… I couldn’t do it all without God; without accepting the rest he offers and the strength He gives. When I feel like I can’t keep up and when I’m overwhelmed is when I’m relying on myself. Thanks for the reminder that life is at it’s best (and really only works) with Jesus.
