Be My Valentine

When I was a little girl, I always looked forward to the Valentine’s Day class party at school. I would get dressed up. My mother would make cookies (we could take homemade ones back then) and I would pick out valentines to give to all of my special friends. I enjoyed receiving attention from others, handwritten notes of love and affirmation from friends, and dreaming of the day when my one true Valentine would come and sweep me off my feet.

Be My Valentine.

What do those words really mean? “If you love me, then you will bring me flowers”. If you love me then, you will take me out to dinner. If you love me then, you will remember to tell me. If you love me, then…..”  For me, Valentines Day can often be a day where I put unrealistic expectations on a man whom I already know loves me and shouldn’t have to prove it with flowers and chocolates.

But then why does my heart still yearn to be romanced?  Why do I find myself “reminding” him to remember a day — a day of love and romance — when every day should be one of love and serving one another? Why does my heart feel crushed when he doesn’t come through the door with arms full of flowers or candy?

Deep down in the heart of every woman is the desire to be loved, cherished and treasured. But no one person can fill that void. No husband, no boy friend, no parent or best friend. The only One who can ever fulfill the need, the longing deep inside for love and romance is God Himself. He is the only Valentine that will never disappoint. He is one who loves unconditionally, no matter what. He never changes, and He never grows tired of romancing us. His kind of love is the best kind of love.

I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you. (Jeremiah 31:3)

Be My Valentine.  Do you hear the Lord calling you today? He is waiting for you with open arms. He may not be carrying a box of chocolates or a big bouquet of flowers, but I guarantee you that the gifts He has to give to you are so much better!

    So true, Barbie. Beautiful post.
He lavishes His love upon us like no other and showers us with gifts every day. He doesn’t need a day on a calendar to remember to show us love. . .
And I’m going to strive to love Him like that this year. Valentine’s Day everyday!
    He deserves it.
